Fly Fishing with Anglers of Honor

10/3/2020
Hosted by: River Deep Foundation & Denver SCI HOP
Location: Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing Club - Black Hawk, CO
Participants: Operation TBI Freedom, Ft. Carson SRU

Fly Fishing with Anglers of Honor
This is our final fly fishing outing for the year. The stream is low and clear so the fishing will be a challenge. We start with the regular Anglers of Honor instruction. Next, everyone is given gear and assigned to guides. Most of the group today has not had experience fly fishing so they are excited to be in the stream! Regardless of the low water, everyone manages to put a fish or two in the net by lunchtime. A good, hot meal and some fish stories are perfect to round out this chilly day. Thanks so much to Lincoln Hills and all of the Anglers of Honor guides for another great season! And to all of the volunteers and other groups who help make these trips successful.

Family, Fishing & Fun Day

9/26/2020
September 26, 2020
Location:
Colorado Youth Outdoors, Windsor Colorado
Hosted by: River Deep and SCI Humanitarian Outreach Program
Participants: Operation TBI and Ft. Carson SRU

Today we are at the beautiful Colorado Youth Outdoors Swift Ponds Facility in Northern Colorado that features many ponds, a 3-D archery course and trap shooting range. Over 100 veterans and active duty soldiers from Ft. Carson and their family members are attending today. This event is all about enjoying time outdoors in the sun, fishing, and connecting with each other. Today’s group will use everything from Snoopy rods for the kids to fly rods. Many of the adults and kids on this trip have never been fishing, so when they hook up with a fish for the first time it’s wonderful to see their expressions of amazement! We are thrilled to be able to provide this new experience.

For lunch we are treated to a meaty feast provided and cooked up on a smoker by the All American Beef Battalion—ribeye steak, all beef hot dogs along with mashed potatoes, corn, chips and cookies! The food is fantastic and we are so grateful for their support and participation today. After lunch it’s time for some more fishing to round out the day. As with all our outings, we hope that our participants found a bit of peace today and were able to take one step closer to healing. And we hope they will join us again!

We would like to thank all the volunteers and organizations that come together to make these large outings possible especially the staff from Belleview Spine and Wellness for volunteering with us today. They have a very helpful program that helps veterans and active duty soldiers achieve freedom from pain. We look forward to working together and sharing their program as a resource.

Fly Fishing with Anglers of Honor

Our Anglers of Honor program is hosting veterans from Operation TBI Freedom as well as active duty soldiers from Ft. Carson SRU today at Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing Club. Everyone is ready to learn about Fly Fishing and try their luck in South Boulder Creek and the adjacent ponds. The weather is perfect and the water is clear. After a morning of basic instruction and some great fishing with the AOH guides everyone has netted a few beautiful trout! We head to the deck of the eco-center for special lunch treat from the Denver branch of the All American Beef Battalion—a non-profit based out of Kansas. They have brought a pull-behind smoker and will be serving ribeye steak, hot dogs, corn mash potatoes and cookies for dessert. The lunch is an amazing companion to the blue sky, sunshine and fish stories. All of the vets and soldiers are given their own Anglers of Honor fly rod with the hope that they will continue to learn, enjoy the healing waters and fish with their new fly rods. Special thanks to the All American Beef Battalion, the volunteers and guides for helping make this a spectacular day!

Fly Fishing with Anglers of Honor
Almost all of our participants today are new to fly fishing. Our focus will be on instruction—the Trout are a bonus. Everyone is taught the fundamentals before heading to the stream and ponds. The guides at Lincolns Hill are the best and always go above and beyond to ensure everyone has a great time. After a morning of fishing, we gather on the deck of the eco-center for a great lunch and some fish stories. Our hope is that all who participated today will continue to Fly Fish as a way to help the healing process. A big thanks to all the guides and volunteers for a fun day

It’s the first Anglers of Honor outing of the year! The weather is perfect along with the natural beauty of Lincoln Hills and Boulder Creek. We have an enthusiastic group of vets and soldiers. We start with the basics of fly fishing, casting, gear and knots. Now it’s time to put on the waders and head to the creek with our guides. Everyone manages to put a trout or two in the net and all are safely released for another day. We meet back up at the eco-center deck from some BBQ and fish stories. Another successful day of fishing and fun in the outdoors!

Fly Fishing

October 5th, 2019

Location: Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing Club, Black Hawk, CO.
Hosted By: River Deep Foundation and SCI HOP
Participants: Craig Hospital,Operation TBI Freedom & Ft. Carson Warrior Transition Battalion

It's the final fishing outing for the year, and we have a packed house of people all ready to learn how to fly fish and try their luck on the ponds and streams of Lincoln Hills. We started with instruction on the basics,
geared up and are assigned our guides for the day.

Whether it's the stream or the pond, everyone had hookups with some big rainbow and cutthroat trout. After a morning of fishing, we gathered back at the deck of the eco center, and are treated to a fantastic BBQ lunch.

It's been a great day and season with the Anglers of Honor program at Lincoln Hills. A big thanks to all the guides, volunteers and everyone who made it possible.

Float Trip & Fly Fishing on the Colorado River

8/16/2019
Float Trip & Fly Fishing on the Colorado River
August 16-19th, 2019

Location: Float Trip & Fly Fishing on the Colorado River, Kremmling, CO.
Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP
Participants: Craig Hospital

Sponsored by Bob & Debbie Dye along with Blue Quill Angler, Breckenridge Outfitters, Jim Neihbereger, Jeremy Hyatt, Chip Keith, John Perizzolo, who donated their time, Andy at Highland Tavern in Denver, and Muddy Creek Cabins

We arrived last Friday afternoon in Kremmling, CO. We stayed at the Muddy Creek Cabins. Bob Dye, his guides and drift boats met us at 1:00PM. Some of the group went to a near by pond and fished from the boat, and the rest of the group enjoyed the scenery at the cabins.

Later in the afternoon we gathered at the picnic area for a barbeque treat consisting of elk burgers and some great side dishes. This was donated and prepared by Andy, owner of the Highland Tavern in Denver. After dinner, we gathered around the fire pit, roasted marshmelllows, and got to know one another. Saturday morning, we met up at the Moose Cafe for breakfast, and then back at the cabin to meet the guides and 5 drift boats at 9:00AM. The guides had all the fly rods rigged up and ready to go as most of our group is new to fly fishing. After some instruction and attempts at catching some trout, the group was excited to enjoy floating down the Colorado River.

The flies hit the river as everyone anxiously awaits a strike. It was a great day for everyone and fish were caught by all. After the float, we went back to the cabins for a short rest, and then headed into town for dinner. Afterwards, we were treated to Kremmling Demolition Derby. It was a great trip! Special thanks to all to everyone who helped make this trip a success! We are already looking forward to next year.
