Location: Eastern Colorado Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom Whitetail Deer Hunt River Deep had the opportunity to send two Veterans from Operation TBI Freedom on a Whitetail Hunt in eastern Colorado thanks to our Hosts, John Howe and his son Tristen Howe – thank you for inviting us into your lodge for this Hunting experience. Unfortunately because of the nasty winter storm that moved in we were only able to accomplish 50% of our mission of harvesting these Deer, the blowing snow and high winds being our biggest obstacle. As with all River Deep outings we were able to turn the Hunt into an educational experience, everything from Whitetail behavior during cold snaps, storms and high winds to the harvesting and processing of said animals, thanks to our guide Wes Yarnell. All in all the Hunt was a success and our veterans learned some new things that they will be able to take with them into the field for the future hunts. Again I would like to thank our Hosts John Howe and his son Tristen Howe, Wes Yarnell our guide and Parker Scanlan our camp cook for everything they did for our Veterans and River Deep Foundation. Date: November 13, 2021 Location: Valhalla Hunt Club - Bennett, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Craig Hospital Trap Shooting It was a warm day but it was windy! The strong winds made trap shooting the clays extra challenging. The participants did, however, have the opportunity to use some of the adaptive shooting equipment developed in partnership with QL+ and Colorado School of Mines engineering students. Despite the winds, everyone hit a few clays—even some of the veteran's family members who were new to trap shooting! After a few hours of shooting clays, everyone was ready for lunch so we went back to the clubhouse to enjoy a nice meal and talk about the day's activity. A big thank you to the Valhalla staff that always make us feel at home! Bob Adwar Executive Director, River Deep Foundation Chairman, SCI Humanitarian Outreach Program ![]()
Date: May 17, 2021 Location: Eric Englehard Farm, Longmont, CO Hosted by: River Deep foundation and Denver SCIHOP Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom Turkey Hunt We hosted two veterans referred by Operation TBI Freedom for this outing. They were anxious to try their luck at spring turkey hunting — one used a bow and the other a shotgun. Both participants are outdoorsmen, but it's been a while since they last hunted for turkeys. They had a great day out in the field and managed to harvest one bird. Big thanks to Collin who guided today, Infinite Outdoors USA who connected us with this opportunity, and Eric Engelhard for use of his property. November 9, 2019 Location: Valhalla Hunt Club, Bennett, CO. Hosted By: River Deep Foundation and SCI HOP Participants: Craig Hospital and the Colorado School of Mines It's a warm November day, perfect to be outside. The first activity of the day will be trap shooting, our group consists of beginners and seasoned shooters, as family members are welcome to shoot a few clays. The School of Mines students will be with us, testing out their new adaptive equipment ad shooting device. At lunch time we headed down to the club house for a great lunch and some discussion about the pheasant hunt. It is time to gather the dogs and head up to the fields in search of pheasants. We have two track chairs that effortlessly navigate the tall grass. The dogs went to work and we managed to flush a few birds. At the end of the day, we managed to harvest a few pheasants for dinner. It's been a great day and big thanks to Valhalla Hunt Club and all the volunteers. Bob Adwar River Deep Foundation, President SCI HOP, VP/Humanitarian Chairman ![]()
October 12, 2019 Location: Valhalla Hunt Club, Bennett, CO. Hosted By: River Deep Foundation and SCI HOP Participants: Craig Hospital, Colorado School of Mines and Quality of Life Plus We started the day with a tune-up at the trap range. We are testing out adaptive equipment, shooting prototypes from the Colorado School of Mines, and the students are anxious to try them out. Everyone will have the same amount of time shooting some clays. At noon, we headed to the Valhalla Hunt Clubhouse for lunch, where we were treated to pheasant casserole and some delicious side dishes. After lunch, we headed up to the tall grass for a pheasant hunt. Gun dogs and hunters, all excited to flush some birds into the sky and hopefully some into the vest. At the end of the day, we managed to bring a few birds home, and equally as important, everyone had a great day outdoors in the sun. A big thanks to Valhalla Hunt Club and staff, and all the volunteers who made this outing possible. Bob Adwar River Deep Foundation, President SCI HOP, VP/Humanitarian Chairman ![]()
Texas Wild Pig Hunt - June 7-10, 2019 Location: Vernon, Texas Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP Participants: Craig Hospital and Operation TBI Freedom What a weekend we had stalking and hunting wild pigs in Vernon, Texas! We arrived in Vernon Friday evening and couldn’t wait to get out and start stalking the wild pigs. Our first veteran was able to take down a 130 lb. sow, shortly before dark. The weather during the late afternoon and early mornings was ideal for being out in the Texas heat. Early Saturday morning, after breaking up into two groups, we headed out into the brush to do some more spotting and stalking. Shortly before noon, our second veteran was able to take a 150 lb. boar. That evening wasn’t as fruitful but everyone had a good time sneaking through the brush. Sunday, our last day, we headed out at the crack of dawn to get jump on the day and hopefully a couple pigs for our remaining veterans. We started out early Sunday morning, and by the evening, the hunt is a bust for our group, but a great time was had by all. A huge thank you to our host, Amy Duncan, and her to guides Zach and Andrew who helped our veterans all weekend with the hunt. May 17-19, 2019 Location: Birdcity, Kansas Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP Participants: Ft. Carson WTB The River Deep Alliance and Denver SCI HOP recently hosted two turkey hunting trips in Bird City, Kansas. With generous efforts and support from the local community, ranchers, and farmers; Veterans from the Warrior Transition Battalion on Fort Carson were able to make the trip and successfully harvest amazing Kansas toms! The weekend started off with a meet and greet with local farmers that allowed military service members to utilize a total of over 35,000 acres of land for hunting. The first day of hunting started around 4:00 a.m. A well-placed hay barrel blind yielded a handsome Tom that came in at just around 20 lbs. Sergeant Dennis Hooks, originally from southern Illinois, landed his first ever Tom with the help of local guide Colin Mulligan. Colin knew the terrain like the back of his hand and was able to put two more veterans on a birds throughout the weekend. There were many stories shared as well as new ones made over a gorgeous Kansas country backdrop. We look forward to more opportunities like this in the fall. A big thank you to the Bird City community for hosting a very memorable weekend. Staff Sergeant Scott Huyvaert Bob Adwar River Deep, President SCI HOP, VP/Humanitarian Chairman ![]()
April 13th, 2019 Location: Kersey, CO. Hosted By: River Deep and SCI HOP Participants: Operation TBI Freedom Kersey Turkey Hunt This property in Kersey Colorado is a gem! There is an abundance of wildlife, with the beautiful Platte River running through the property. What a great way to open the spring turkey season. One veteran was able to harvest his bird on the opening day, with snow still on the ground. A very nice Tom, his biggest bird ever. Much of the rest of the day was spent calling and scouting the birds for our second day hunt. Our second day started with crossing the river through thick bank of fog, so thick we couldn’t see the sand bar in the middle of the river. As we waited for First light, the woods came alive with turkeys calling to each other through the thick fog. As the fog rolled rack, we could finally make out 2 jakes working their way towards our decoys. This was the first turkey hunt for two of our vets, and both brought home their birds. An incredible time was had by all! A big thank you to our host Sean Mulligan, our guides Colin Mulligan and Conner Flansburg. January 21st & 28th, 2019 Location: RGG Outfitters, Strassburg, CO. Hosted By: River Deep and SCI HOP Participants: Operation TBI Freedom & Fort Carson Warrior Transition Battalion Antelope Hunt January ended with River Deep Alliance and SCI-HOP Denver sponsoring one veteran and one active duty soldier in successfully filling the last antelope tags of the 2018-2019 season. The day started off with a quick yet powerful snow storm that covered most of Colorado. Strassburg to Limon was no exception, with some areas reaching almost eight inches of snow and low temperatures. These weather conditions keep the antelope herds on high alert as limited visibility contributed the herds anxiety. Early in the morning, the first antelope were successfully harvested as the herd we found had not had any pressure. The second hunter, a Fort Carson service member, had a much more challenging hunt presented to him as the herd moved quickly across the plains at distances that proved difficult to acquire a good target. The second team for the morning pushed out almost two miles on foot from where the herd was first spotted. With permission from the surrounding farmers, we were able to get ahead of a few antelope that had separated themselves. With the high ground as an advantage, the second antelope was successfully taken after almost an hour and a half of tracking. The team then took turns carrying the game back about a mile through think snow and brush. The hunt proved to be challenging due to the conditions, however it was one of the most rewarding events presented by River Deep Alliance & SCI-HOP Denver. It was a perfect end of the big game season as we prepare for the spring events that include fishing, archery, photography, late season bird hunting, and also pottery events. 2019 has started off with more events than ever and will probed to be one of the busiest years in SCI-HOP history. A huge thank you to everyone involved that make events like these possible. We look forward to an absolutely amazing year.
