Jeanne Springer from Remount Foundation, and her staff started us with a simple herd observation and grooming exercise. We had a brief therapeutic discussion at the end of the exercise before getting ready for the trail ride. Location: Colorado Youth Outdoors - Windsor, Colorado Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP Participants: Craig Hospital & Operation TBI Freedom and Ft. Carson WTB It's a warm, sunny spring day and the perfect temperature to be outdoors for fishing and archery. Both the kids and adults are anxious to head for the ponds and range. Arrows fly while bass and bluegill are reeled in at the ponds. What a fun bunch of guides and instructors to help out. Wonderful to provide these families with a much needed day together of fun and relaxation. At lunchtime, we all gather at the outdoor pavilion for some delicious BBQ provided by Jim & Nicks BBQ Restaurant. They always provide a wonderful meal for everyone to enjoy. After lunch, we hand out some door prizes...fishing rods, hats, footballs and more. There is plenty of time for more archery and fishing. It's been another successful Family Fun Day and we look forward to the next one. Big thanks for all the volunteers and to Colorado Youth Outdoors for the beautiful setting. May 17-19, 2019 Location: Birdcity, Kansas Hosted By: River Deep Alliance and SCI HOP Participants: Ft. Carson WTB The River Deep Alliance and Denver SCI HOP recently hosted two turkey hunting trips in Bird City, Kansas. With generous efforts and support from the local community, ranchers, and farmers; Veterans from the Warrior Transition Battalion on Fort Carson were able to make the trip and successfully harvest amazing Kansas toms! The weekend started off with a meet and greet with local farmers that allowed military service members to utilize a total of over 35,000 acres of land for hunting. The first day of hunting started around 4:00 a.m. A well-placed hay barrel blind yielded a handsome Tom that came in at just around 20 lbs. Sergeant Dennis Hooks, originally from southern Illinois, landed his first ever Tom with the help of local guide Colin Mulligan. Colin knew the terrain like the back of his hand and was able to put two more veterans on a birds throughout the weekend. There were many stories shared as well as new ones made over a gorgeous Kansas country backdrop. We look forward to more opportunities like this in the fall. A big thank you to the Bird City community for hosting a very memorable weekend. Staff Sergeant Scott Huyvaert Bob Adwar River Deep, President SCI HOP, VP/Humanitarian Chairman ![]()
This is the first fishing outing of the season. The weather is perfect with the sun shining on the river and ponds. We have a large group of Anglers, most have never fly fished before and they are all excited to learn. Before we hit the water, we start with some fundamentals; casting, knots, and gear. Now its time to suit up and get paired with the guides of Anglers of Honor. Some will be in the river and others on the pond. Everyone is having a great time learning about fly fishing and catching fish at the same time. Its getting close to lunchtime and we will be enjoying some delicious bar-b-que from our friends at Jim N' Nicks. Its been a great day and thanks to all the guides, volunteers, and everyone who made today possible. Bob Adwar River Deep, President SCI HOP, VP/Humanitarian Chairman ![]()
