A group of veterans and Colorado School of Mines engineering student were in the pool to learn the basics of SCUBA diving in a safe and fun environment. The students joined us as part of the project they are working on through the Quality of Life Plus organization. They are helping to develop a device that will monitor heartbeat and blood pressure in real time while diving. The goal is to better understand the benefits of SCUBA diving for those suffering with TSD, TBI, migraine headaches and other emotional and physical issues. Thank you to the Denver Adaptive Divers staff for another fantastic experience!

Location: Art Students League of Denver Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Craig Hospital, VA Abstract Acrylics Artist Homare Ikeda is our instructor for tonight’s class. We are happy to have some clients here that have attended several of the other art classes we organize, as they vary in subject matter from month to month. First, the easels, paints, and necessary tools are distributed to the students. Homare demonstrates different techniques as he paints his own work of art and he guides the class to use their imagination as they create their paintings. Each person has a chance to show their work to the class and they have a discussion to offer helpful hints for future works. It’s been such a fun night. Thank you to Homare and all the staff at the Art Student League of Denver for making this ongoing program possible. Date: February 7, 2022
Location: Cottonwood Center for the Arts Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom, Ft. Carson SRU Art Class - Quilling Four veterans and three family members enjoyed a fun class at Cottonwood Center for the Arts. The evening started with some background about Quilling which is process that, as we learned, was invented in Europe during the Middle Ages. It involves rolling up strips of colored paper and shaping them into different designs to create a piece of art! Each participant was able to take their work of art home with them and are excited to have learned a new, meditative technique for creating art! Date: February 6, 2022
Location: RMS Gear, Wheatridge, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI, Craig Hospital Archery Instruction Everyone had a fun and informative day learning to use a secure and compound bow. The instructors at RMS Gear began by going over the range rules with the group and then explained the fundamentals of archery. We were then able to practice letting the arrows fly to see how close they could get to the bullseye. After a bit of practice we focused on consistency and how to make the necessary adjustments to improve the accuracy. When lunch arrived everyone was such a good time they have a hard time putting the bows down. A big thanks to all the folks at RMS Gear for making it fun day for everyone! Date: February 5, 2022
Location: Kilroy's Workshop Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom, Ft. Carson SRU Blacksmithing Five veterans and two family members attended this month's Fundamentals of Blacksmithing class. Our Master Blacksmith, Ron Hardman explained that while safety and details are important, they should not be an obstacle to having fun. First they learned a little bit about the history of blacksmithing and put all the demonstrated skills into practice for themselves, creating a small knife to take home. |
