Location: USAFA Equestrian Center, Colorado Springs, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom Equine Assisted Learning It was another amazing day at the Air Force Academy! We had veterans and their family members learning about the benefits of Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) from our instructor, Jennie. She conducted a few series of EAL exercises to help our group understand more about this therapy and its benefits. It was also a little special for one of our family members. As with all of our EAL sessions, it was followed by a nice, enjoyable horseback ride. Location: RSS Outfitters, Limon, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom Antelope Hunt Our day started out at sunrise and it was a beautiful way to begin. We were met by our guides who divided us into smaller groups to give each individual the best opportunity to fill their Antelope tags. And it worked out perfectly! Everyone was able to fill their tags and put some meat into their freezers. New skills were learned and new friends were made! Thank you to our guides Brad and Eli Weisensee, Scott Maranville, Lane Clavel and Russell Maclennan for securing the land vouchers and setting up the hunt. Our veterans had a memorable experience thanks to your time, effort and expertise. It was greatly appreciated by all! Location: Kilroy’s Workshop, Colorado Springs, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Ft. Carson SRU, Operation TBI Freedom, VA Blacksmithing Another amazing Saturday at Kilroy’s Workshop! Veterans attending learned the principles of blacksmithing in forging metal. We had several veterans from different organizations, including Operation TBI Freedom and the VA, who came to class accompanied by their family members. Everyone who attended had an opportunity to make their own knife to take home with them. It was a very enjoyable time and experience for all, especially the time shared with fellow veterans. Location: Art Students League of Denver Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Ft. Carson SRU, Craig Hospital, VA Art Class - Tooling Foil Fish What a fun class learning how to work with metal! We learned to trace a pattern—in this case a fish—onto a thin piece of metal and then how to add more detail such as scales and fins to give it more dimension. We then added a patina finish to the entire foil fish which gave it some old world charm. A big thanks to our instructor, Amy, and the Art Students League of Denver for making this a fun and inspirational class. Our Master Blacksmith, Ron Hardman took his time to make sure everyone understood what to expect from the class. First they learned a little bit about the history of blacksmithing and put all the skills they learned in practice. Each participant created a knife to take home. Location: Kremmling, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Craig Hospital and Operation TBI Float and Fish Trip The weather was warm and the water was cool. What a day we had floating down and fly fishing on the Colorado River! Not only did we get to see some beautiful country, we also watched bald eagles and golden eagles doing some fishing as well. What a sight! With all the recent rain, the river was pretty muddy and madeit a little harder to catch fish. Regardless, we all managed to catch some fish with lots of story telling and smiles to go around. A big thanks to Bob and Deb Dye and the other fishing guides they lined up, who all volunteered to make this amazing trip possible. Location: Elevenmile Reservoir, Lake George, CO Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom, Ft. Carson SRU Camping and Balloon Fly We always have a fantastic time at the annual weekend trip to Eleven Mile State Park. Veterans and their families had campsites with beautiful views of the lake and mountains. On Friday, our activities included boating, fishing, and hiking, and a chance for everyone to become acquainted. In the evening we gathered together for dinner prepared by our friend Marty from Roosters Competition BBQ. With BBQ and camping going hand-in-hand, it was the perfect delicious dinner for our hungry crew. Saturday we rose early and left for the hot-air balloon launch site. Rides were provided compliments of Pikes Peak Ballooning Society. Not only did they provide the beautiful balloons and pilots, they also fed our group! A big thank you to them for their generosity. They made it a fun and memorable experience for everyone who participated! Location: Lincoln Hills Hosted by: River Deep Foundation Participating Groups: Operation TBI Freedom, Craig Hospital, VA, Ft. Carson SRU Fly Fishing - Anglers of Honor We had an enthusiastic group of veterans and Craig Hospital grads ready to learn fly fishing! The experienced guides from Front Range Anglers started with teaching the fundamentals of gear, knots and casting and then providing further instructions in the crystal clear stream. The trout could be seen rising to the surface to snack on the bugs, making it even more enticing! The fly fishing continued until it was time for lunch which was provided by Gondolier Restaurant.
