Pheasant Hunt
1/2/2021
January 2, 2021 Pheasant Hunt at The Bluffs This is the first outing of 2021 and we are excited to be hosting a group veterans from Operation TBI Freedom and Ft. Carson SRU. After some trap shooting and lunch, we split up into two groups of hunters with guides and dogs. It's a warm and sunny January day, perfect for walking the meadows and woods in search of pheasants. Everyone is having a great time and manages to put a few birds in the vests. We measure the success of our outings based on the enjoyment it brings to the participants and, thanks to everyone at The Bluffs, this day is another winner. We look forward to another year of watching our clients make steps toward healing through fun activities like this. Art Class - Xmas Ornaments
12/7/2020
Date: Monday, December 7, 2020 Hosted by: River Deep Foundation & Denver SCI HOP Location: Cottonwood Art Center - Colorado Springs Participants: Operation TBI Freedom Art Class - Christmas Ornaments This is the final art class for the year and we are creating Christmas ornaments and cards. The group of veterans and family member attendees listened to Christmas music and made their festive holiday decorations. Our instructor, Annie Pieper, had a great setup with a bunch of good treats for the kiddos. Due to COVID safety guidelines, the dynamic of the year’s art classes has been a little bit different, but it didn’t stop anyone from enjoying themselves and learning new skills. We are excited to offer this opportunity to more clients and to keep more veterans and their families engaged in life during this especially trying time. ![]()

Trap Shoot & Pheasant Hunt at The Bluffs
11/25/2020
It was a beautiful sunny day with no wind. A perfect day to be outdoors! Most of the
participants were new to trapshooting and bird hunting. We started out with the fundamentals of shooting a shotgun, hitting a flying target, and the safety issues in the field with pointing and flushing dogs. Then it was time for a great lunch at the Bluffs Lodge. After lunch we split up into two groups and the guides used two dogs for each group. We walked the meadows and grasslands in search of pheasants, but simply being in the fields with the sun shining and watching the dogs do what they love was enough to make for a fun day! The birds were just a bonus! At the end of the day there were a lot of bonus points and everyone went home with some healthy food. A big thanks to The Bluffs, the guides, and the dogs! 11/14/2020
November 13-17, 2020 Location: NRA Whittington Center- Raton, New Mexico Sponsored by: NRA Whittington Center, GunWerks and SCI This was an amazing opportunity to send one Veteran and their family on a Trophy Elk Hunt at the acclaimed NRA Whittington Center in New Mexico. This was a group endeavor between these groups: NRA Whittington Center who donated the tag/hunt to Gunwerks, who then reached out to Safari Club International (SCI), who then reached out to Denver Chapter of Safari Club International Humanitarian Outreach Program (SCIHOP), and River Deep Foundation to select the Veteran to go on this hunt. NRA Whittington Center provided the guide, the tag and the incredible place to hunt. Gunwerks supplied the rifle, ammunition and a firearms instructor, and SCI paid for all of the lodging, processing, mounting expenses. SCIHOP and River Deep Foundation decided which Veteran to send. After days of deliberation, they decided to send Chuck Williamson and his spouse Susan. Chuck and Susan started as clients in 2013 and participated in several events over a couple of years. Then in 2017, they began volunteering to “pay it forward” because they realized how these outings change and save lives. River Deep decided that this was a great way to say thank you for all the time and effort they generously give toward our mission. The group consisted of Eric Whaley, the guide; Ian Minor, the Gunwerks instructor; Dan Brooks from SCI; Jeff Parker, the videographer; Chuck and Susan Williamson and Chuck’s service dog, Token. They were all treated to beautiful accommodations with breathtaking views, wonderful meals and first class hospitality. The first day was spent getting to know each other and sighting in the rifle on the Cooper Shooting Range. The following day, they hunted for almost 12 hours. Because of the intense winds, however, the day was blown. On the third day, SUCCESS!!! Chuck, who had never truly hunted before, harvested his first bull elk—an impressive 6 by 6 with a 540 yard shot! No meat was left behind because Chuck insisted that all the meat had to be taken to share with some fellow Veterans. After the successful hunt, the amazing guide, Eric, took the crew on a sight-seeing adventure around the property. They first went to the ghost town of the Van Houten Mine and learned about the rich history of this area. Eric then gave them a special treat and took them to one of the highest spots on the property where they were enamored by the phenomenal panoramic views! Not only was it a successful hunt and incredible vacation, true friendships were formed. Chuck and Susan are incredibly grateful and feel very blessed for being giving this incredible opportunity and adventure. Fly Fishing with Anglers of Honor
10/3/2020
Hosted by: River Deep Foundation & Denver SCI HOP Location: Lincoln Hills Fly Fishing Club - Black Hawk, CO Participants: Operation TBI Freedom, Ft. Carson SRU Fly Fishing with Anglers of Honor This is our final fly fishing outing for the year. The stream is low and clear so the fishing will be a challenge. We start with the regular Anglers of Honor instruction. Next, everyone is given gear and assigned to guides. Most of the group today has not had experience fly fishing so they are excited to be in the stream! Regardless of the low water, everyone manages to put a fish or two in the net by lunchtime. A good, hot meal and some fish stories are perfect to round out this chilly day. Thanks so much to Lincoln Hills and all of the Anglers of Honor guides for another great season! And to all of the volunteers and other groups who help make these trips successful. Bob Adwar President, River Deep Foundation/ Anglers of Honor VP, SCI Humanitarian Outreach ![]()
Family, Fishing & Fun Day
9/26/2020
September 26, 2020 Location: Colorado Youth Outdoors, Windsor Colorado Hosted by: River Deep and SCI Humanitarian Outreach Program Participants: Operation TBI and Ft. Carson SRU Today we are at the beautiful Colorado Youth Outdoors Swift Ponds Facility in Northern Colorado that features many ponds, a 3-D archery course and trap shooting range. Over 100 veterans and active duty soldiers from Ft. Carson and their family members are attending today. This event is all about enjoying time outdoors in the sun, fishing, and connecting with each other. Today’s group will use everything from Snoopy rods for the kids to fly rods. Many of the adults and kids on this trip have never been fishing, so when they hook up with a fish for the first time it’s wonderful to see their expressions of amazement! We are thrilled to be able to provide this new experience. For lunch we are treated to a meaty feast provided and cooked up on a smoker by the All American Beef Battalion—ribeye steak, all beef hot dogs along with mashed potatoes, corn, chips and cookies! The food is fantastic and we are so grateful for their support and participation today. After lunch it’s time for some more fishing to round out the day. As with all our outings, we hope that our participants found a bit of peace today and were able to take one step closer to healing. And we hope they will join us again! We would like to thank all the volunteers and organizations that come together to make these large outings possible especially the staff from Belleview Spine and Wellness for volunteering with us today. They have a very helpful program that helps veterans and active duty soldiers achieve freedom from pain. We look forward to working together and sharing their program as a resource. Equine Assited Learning
9/22/2020
September 22, 2020 Hosted by: River Deep Foundation and SCIHOP Location: USAFA Equestrian Center, Remount Foundation Participants: Operation TBI Freedom Another amazing day at Air Force Academy! We had six Operation TBI Freedom staff members participate in the program in order to better understand the benefits and power of Equine Assisted Learning and how this type of therapy can positively impact our clients. We also learned more about the Remount Foundation organization as a whole and how they serve active-duty military, veterans, first responders and their families with free equine-assisted therapeutic activities within a healing, natural environment and a supportive community to empower them to heal physically, mentally and spiritually. We are so grateful to partner with them. Bob Adwar River Deep Foundation, President SCI HOP - VP of Humanitarian Outreach ![]()
